Who Was Joan Florence?
Some people leave behind houses, possessions, or money.
Others leave behind something far more valuable.
They leave behind the way they made people feel.
Joan Florence was one of those people.
Born and raised in London’s East End, Joan lived through times that were not always easy. Life presented challenges, hardships, and moments that could have easily made someone bitter.
Yet somehow, she remained kind.
She remained thoughtful.
She remained caring.
She had a way of making people feel welcome, listened to, and loved. She didn’t need grand gestures or big speeches. Her kindness lived in the small things, a conversation, a cup of tea, a thoughtful word, a gentle smile.
Those are often the things we remember most.
For me, Joan was more than a grandmother.
She was one of my greatest teachers.
Long before I understood words like mindfulness, conservation, or slow living, she was already teaching them through the way she lived.
She noticed things.
The first flowers appearing in spring.
Birds visiting the garden.
The changing colours of the seasons.
The beauty hidden in ordinary places.
She taught me that nature isn’t something separate from us. It’s something we belong to.
A garden wasn’t just a collection of plants.
It was a place of peace.
A place of wonder.
A place where life quietly continued, season after season.
Many of my happiest memories involve gardens, wildlife, flowers, and simply spending time outdoors. Looking back, I realise those passions didn’t appear by accident.
They were planted by Joan.
Like seeds.
And over the years, they grew.
Today, Joan is greatly missed.
There are moments when I still wish I could show her a photograph I’ve taken, tell her about something I’ve seen in nature, or simply sit and talk with her again.
Grief never truly disappears.
But neither does love.
The people we lose continue to live on in the values they gave us, the memories they created, and the parts of themselves they left behind in others.
That is why this business exists.
Joan Florence is more than a brand name.
It is a tribute.
A celebration of a woman who taught me the importance of kindness, curiosity, patience, and finding beauty in the natural world.
Every wildflower, every bird, every garden-inspired product, and every story shared here carries a small piece of that legacy.
My hope is that Joan Florence encourages others to slow down for a moment.
To notice the birds singing outside the window.
To admire a flower growing between paving stones.
To spend a little more time outdoors.
To reconnect with the simple beauty that surrounds us every day.
Because if Joan taught me anything, it was this:
A life does not have to be extraordinary to be meaningful.
Sometimes the greatest legacy a person can leave behind is kindness, love, and a reminder to appreciate the world around us.
And that legacy will continue to bloom for many years to come.
